Cancer Survivorship

There remains a perception that cancer is a fatal disease, that it is invariably accompanied by pain and discomfort, and that the quality of one's life is almost always seriously compromised by a cancer diagnosis.

In fact, nearly 64% of all adults diagnosed with cancer will survive beyond five years and there are more than 10.5 million cancer survivors alive today. Modern treatments enable many people to survive their cancer or manage their disease for long periods of time, and with a quality of life that enables them to continue making important contributions to society. The advances in treatment and, indeed, the term "cancer survivor," are due to the incredible advances being made in cancer research.

While some who survive cancer will live disease- and side effects-free, others will experience physical, financial, psycho-social and spiritual effects. For some families, cancer becomes a chronic disease that can present challenges long after treatment is complete.
